100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1916 EASTER RISING, DUBLIN, IRELAND, TO BE HELD ON GREEN IN NEW HAVEN, CT
On Sunday, April 24th at 8:45 am, on the New Haven Green, there will be a Mass for Peace and a Flag Raising ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Uprising. Our event will focus on local families who were involved in the events of Easter week and then immigrated to New Haven county. As was originally done in 1990, the start of our event. Ceremonies will start at 8:45am and conclude at 10:30am. Co-celebrants Fr. Holt and Fr. Kelly will say mass.
Following the Mass there will be a brief ceremony to honor the patriots of 1916. This annual public ceremony serves as a reminder to all ethnic groups that freedom and liberty carry a high price. Local honorees are remembered in a roll call and the original “Proclamation of Freedom” will be read.
2016 marks the 26th Anniversary of this New Haven event established by Michael V. Lynch and Jim Reardon to honor those local patriots who were involved in Ireland during this time and then moved to the New Haven area.
The 1916 Easter Uprising occurred when approximately one thousand men and women captured the General Post Office building in Dublin, Ireland in another effort to break the bonds of British rule and gain independence for their country. This became a key turning point on the road to Irish independence. This year marks the 100th anniversary.
Police and Fire Emerald Societies, as well as state and local political officials, are encouraged to attend. Please call for arrangements. This event will take place rain or shine. If we need to move indoors, it will be held at The Playwright Irish Pub, 1232 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Tune in to Fox61 or WPLR-99.1 FM on Sunday morning for information.
Following the Flag Raising ceremony, there will be a Breakfast Buffet fundraiser held at The Playwright Irish Pub, 1232 Whitney Ave., Hamden. This is a benefit for the New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
