2024 PARADE DATE:
Sunday, March 10, 2024

Dear Potential 2024 Parade Participant:

On behalf of the Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, it is with pride and great
excitement that I extend an invitation to your organization to apply for entry in the Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 10, 2024

The Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade will once again partner with WTNH News 8 to broadcast the parade LIVE and provide real-time commentary. WTNH News 8, an ABC affiliate, holds the distinction as Connecticut’s first television station. Our partnership with WTNH News 8 provides for a larger viewing audience for all participants

We believe marching with us is an opportunity for any organization to experience a tradition going all the way back to 1842. The Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the sixth oldest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States and the oldest in New England. Historically we have over 3100 marchers and more than 250,000 spectators along the parade route. Our parade has received national recognition in the Library of Congress, through a project entitled Local Legacies, which commemorates and celebrates America’s richly diverse culture.

Marching units compete for professionally judged parade awards. The skillful and well-rehearsed
performances attract spectators to what has become the largest single day spectator event in the State of Connecticut. The parade route is approximately 1.3 miles long and units march on level ground the entire way passing sections of downtown New Haven, including the Yale University campus, and continuing past the reviewing stand located across from the historic New Haven Green.

In closing, I would like to take this time to thank you for your potential participation in this free cultural event. The members of the Parade Committee proudly organize this annually for the Greater New Haven community. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions regarding the application process for the 2024 Parade. We greatly appreciate your continued support and look forward to marching with you on Sunday March 10, 2024

All applications will be accepted using our on-line application. 2024 Parade Rules & Regulations along with application instructions can be found on our website. To participate in the parade, please complete the ON-LINE APPLICATION located at this link.

All applications must be received no later than JANUARY 31, 2024 Upon receipt of application, you will receive a confirmation email. After your application is reviewed, we will send you the status of your participation no later than February 10, 2024.

Sincerely,
Patrick Smith
2024 Parade Coordinator

COVID -19 Precautions and requirements:
All current recommendations of the CDC and the City of New Haven must be adhered to on Parade Day by all units & participants.

Stopping along the route:
Stopping to perform along the route is not permitted, unless otherwise authorized by the Parade Coordinator prior to the parade. Any units stopping and performing in front of the reviewing stand or along the parade route
without prior authorization will be automatically disqualified from the competition and forfeit contractual honorariums.
Please ensure that all of your routines or performances can be executed whilst marching. There should be no participants exiting the line of march and into the crowd.

Competitive Judging:
The official judges for the marching and musical competitions are from the Northeast Judging Association. Judges are located at the reviewing stand on Church Street in front of New Haven City Hall. Units are judged according to categories and will compete for a variety of awards. The names of award winners will be published in the “New Haven Register” newspaper. Award recipients are presented with a commemorative plaque during the Parade Awards Night to be held in Spring 2024. Be aware, in the past, judges have deducted points for lack of uniformity, excessive spacing between units, blocking spectators by handlers, and flag code violations!

End of Parade Route:
The last leg of the Parade Route turns off of Church Street at Elm Street and concludes on Elm Street at Orange Street. Marching units are to disperse on Elm and Orange Streets, not Church Street. Please do not impede the flow of the parade participants by congregating on the path alongside Church Street.

Late Arrivals:
All units should arrive & check in with division Marshal at their designated staging areas no later than 12:30 pm on Parade Day. If your unit arrives late for staging, your unit will be placed at the end of the parade (no exceptions). No Candy or giveaways: Per the order of the City of New Haven; No items such as necklaces, candy, toys are to be thrown from automobiles, trucks, floats or distributed from marchers to parade viewers. Under no circumstances should anything be thrown or handed out from a vehicle or from parade participants. This includes promotional items. This is a safety risk for parade participants as well as parade spectators. Units found to be throwing items will run the risk of disqualification and may forfeit contractual honorariums.

Signage:
The presence of placards, banners or other devices including pamphlets intended to spread propaganda, political views or to embarrass any group or unit of marchers are prohibited.
